Temporary Agency Worker Directive

CWU Logo

The Government consultation paper on the implementing the EU Temporary Agency Workers Directive (TAWD) in the UK was published in May 2009 which allowed for a 12 week consultation period.

The deadline for submissions was 31 July 2009 and the Government had indicated that they planed to lay Regulations before the General Election, although no indication had been given on when the new rights for agency workers would come into effect.

As part of the consultation exercise BERR held a number of consultation events around the country in June and July 2009, to take views and comments from stakeholders. The CWU was extremely active at all of the consultation events where along with members of the Telecoms & Financial Services Executive Agency Team, Branch Activists, Regional Secretaries and Agency members attended and made an input.

The CWU was invited to attend specific 'expert' groups where BERR wanted to deal with aspects of derogation that relate to the Directive. This is a part of the Directive that allows the Government to possibly exempt agency workers with permanent contracts from equal treatment and is a key issue to the CWU.

An enormous amount of activity took place in order to maintain pressure and influence during the campaign.
